A recreation of the 'Pyroscaphe', the very first steamboat ever made. I was wanting to make a prop that had a blend of both wood and metal, and would give me the opportunity to improve my texture and baking skills. This was also my first attempt trying to sculpt engravings and other kinds of decoration on to a model, all whilst trying to see how much I could simply bake from the high poly model, without it looking obvious that the engravings aren't properly modelled.
Since the Pyroscaphe was made invented and used in the year 1783, I wanted to show a great amount of decay and weathering on the boat, but not so much that is completely overtook the unique design.
I spent a great deal of time trying out new techniques and trying to really nail down my workflow, but also a lot of time understanding the differences between showcasing models in Marmoset and Unreal 4, and doing my best to make the differences as minimal as possible.
